Alexandria, LA - The 2010 Lambuth Baseball team drove away from the snow of Tennessee into the rain of Louisiana to open the 2010 season. The Eagles looked to open up the season on Friday night, but opening day was pushed back one day due to bad field conditions. The Eagles and the Generals of LSU-Alexandria took to the field on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader. Both teams are members of the Association of Independent Institution. The Aii Conference is in its second season.
Game one of the four game series saw a pitchers dual between Lambuth's Brent Ebinger and LSU-A's Colton Knuckles. Both pitchers only allowed one hit a piece. Ebinger threw the entire game while Knuckles went five innings. With both teams unable to establish an offense, defense became the deciding factor of the game. The Generals committed one error leading to one Lambuth run, while the Eagles committed two errors leading to two General runs. The Eagles mustered only three hits in the game, Mitch Thomson recorded two and Bart White the third. The first game of the season saw Lambuth fall 2-1. Ebinger took the tough loss moving his record to 0-1.
The Eagles bounced right back in game 2 scoring two runs in both the first and third innings and held on for a 4-2 victory to even their record at 1-1. Michael Panthofer took the mound for the Eagles after a year absence from baseball. He did not disappoint going 4 2/3 innings striking out eight and only allowing one run. Matt Fike and Erin Keel held the Generals at check and Zach Hurdt threw a 1-2-3 inning for his first save of the year. Panthofer collected his first win in an Eagle uniform. The offense found their grove collecting seven hits in the game. Thomson and White both had two hits, while Mike Davis, Lee Kimbell and Matt Bird each added a hit. The defense cleaned up for game two committing no fielding errors for the game. The doubleheader was the first of two for the teams during the weekend and was also the first two conference games of only four for the Eagles this spring.
Day two saw the Eagles struggle at the plate again, being no-hit by LSU-A starter Barrett Hernandez thru six innings. The Eagles did muster a run in the sixth without a hit and Lambuth starter Alex Laabs held the Generals offense in check throwing five innings giving up three hits and one unearned run. Laabs struck out four on his way to a no decision. Matt Fike took over for Laabs and held the LSU-A offense scoreless and Mike Davis drove in Kirk Waligora for the go ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. Things looked like they were all good for the Eagles. Zach Hurdt came in looking for his second save in as many games and saw the first pitch he threw of the inning grounded out to third. Lee Kimbell made an errant throw and two pitches later Ted Hilger hit a 0-1 slider over the left field fence for an LSU-A 3-2 victory and a Hurdt loss. The Eagles were led offensively in game three by Mike Nitsos and Mike Davis.
Again, the Eagles did not hang their heads after a tough loss. Lambuth responded by scoring in five of the six innings and beat the Generals 10-0. Jordan Smith started his first game as an Eagle and threw five strong innings striking out two and collecting his first victory of the year. Smith got a lot of help from the offense. Mitch Thomson continued his hot streak as his went 3-4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored on the game. Mike Davis went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Mitch McClay also collected multiple hits with two. Matt Wood made his first start in right field for the Eagles. In the game he collected his first hit, RBI and walked 3 times going 1-1.
Although Lambuth came away only 2-2, it was nice to be outside and get to play the game of baseball. Because of the snow storms in Tennessee, the team had not been on a baseball field for almost two weeks. The team was greeted back home with a similar snow storm and caused the cancellation of the Shepherd College doubleheader on Wednesday. The Eagles are now preparing for the upcoming busy weekend.
Lambuth baseball hosts Delta State University, who is currently ranked #23 in Division II. On Saturday they will play one nine inning game and the 3rd Annual Baseball Leadoff Banquet will follow that evening at 6:00 in the Jack Morris Ballroom. The two teams will come together again on Sunday for a doubleheader. Both days games start at 12:00. We hope to see you all at the ballpark!!!
