Henderson, TN - Not since November, 2001, had the Lambuth Lady Eagles beat Freed-Hardeman University. That all changed Thursday night when No. 16 Lambuth stunned No. 5 FHU on their home court, 74-69.
Lambuth jumped out to a early lead and battled the Lady Lions in a nip and tuck affair for much of the first half. LU took a 17-16 lead with just under nine minutes left and then held the Lady Lions to just seven points the remainder of the half to lead 32-23 at the break.
Lambuth took command of the second half and scooted out to a 18 point lead, 55-37, with 11:50 left. The Lady Lions fought back and cut the lead to 62-59 late, but LU held on to win 74-69.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Dee Preyer who had a season high 28 points. Kristin Brison had 12 points and six rebounds. CT Kintchen scored 11 points before fouling out with just over five minutes left in the contest. Lambuth won the battle of the boards, 41-32. The Lady Eagles are 10-3 when they out rebound their opponents. FHU had only nine offensive rebounds in the contest.
Coach Joe Reints commented after the game, "We really met the challenge tonight. We did not play well at Blue Mountain the other night. Our kids knew we had to play a solid 40 minutes and they did just that. Dee was really focused. I thought Brison did a great job on Cross. She still had 26 points but Kristin made her work hard and held her to just 13 total shots. We will enjoy this win for a few minutes but we have three tough games beginning with Bethel Saturday. Coach Nelson has done a great job with his team and we will have to have this same kind of effort Saturday afternoon."
Lambuth improves to 16-7 on the year and 8-3 in conference play. Lambuth has won seven games in a row.
Lambuth returns home Saturday afternoon to begin a three game homestand. Tip-off is slated for 2pm. Catch the action on WAMP, 88.1 &99.1 or on the web at lambutheagles.com. The game will also be televised on E-Plus TV 6
