The Lambuth Lady Eagles closed the regular season with two big wins this week. Lambuth beat Martin Methodist Thursday night 78-71. The Lady Eagles followed that game with a 84-53 home win over Lyon College Saturday afternoon. With the two wins Lambuth closed the regular season at 22-8 overall and 14-4 in the TranSouth Conference. The Lady Eagles finished tied with FHU in the conference standings but finish third with the tie breaker.
Yolanda Johnson was the big gun Thursday with 24 points. CT Kintchen had 20 points and six rebounds. Dee Preyer had 10 points. MMC outshot Lambuth and won the battle of the boards but Lambuth found a way to win on the road. It was Lambuth's tenth road win on the year against two losses. The Lady Eagles forced MMC into 24 turnovers.
Saturday's contest was much different as Lambuth jumped out to a big first half lead and never looked back. A 30-11 run midway throught the first half proved to be too much for the Lady Pipers. Lambuth led 39-23 at the break and won going away. Lambuth is 21-2 when leading at the break.
It was a special day for all of the Lambuth family as it was Senior Day. Dee Preyer from Memphis Central High School received hugs from her teammates as Coach Joe Reints removed her late in the game to a home crowd standing ovation. Dee scored 10 points in her last regular season game at the Athletic Center. Freshman Rachel Cunningham led Lambuth in scoring with 13 points.
Coach Joe Reints said, 'Our defense was super. I really liked the way we came out with a high level of energy. Dee has been a joy to coach. She is a great guard who does so much for us on both ends of the court. She continues to be a great leader for us. This was a nice way to close out the regular season and now we must practice hard and get ready for the tournament. It looks like we will get Lyon again in the first round so we can know they will be ready when they come in here Wednesday. I am proud of the way our team has handled this long season. We have improved and are a good club. The tourney will be tough and we know we have to play well to advance."
Lambuth opens up against Lyon College Wednesday night at the Athletic Center. Game time is 7pm. For ticket information call 731-425-3368.
You can catch the game on WAMP, 88.1 & 99.1 or on the web at lambutheagles.com.
The Lady Eagles dedicated both wins to the memory of Dr. Emmy Lou Whitehead who passed away this past Monday. The entire Lambuth Athletic family send their love to Dr. Brady Whitehead and his family.
