Much of the success that Henry County High School's Lady Patriot soccer team enjoyed earlier this school year would not have been possible without talented defender Kayla Porter.

Porter has parlayed that talent into a college scholarship, signing a letter of intent Friday morning with Lambuth University.

During the announcement at HCHS, she said she's looking forward to both athletics and academics.

"They have a good soccer program and a good program for my degree," she said.
Porter will study biology and predentistry while in college.

"I hope to first of all earn my degree and have success this season and throughout my career," she said.
Sherry Porter, her mother, shared in the excitement.

"I'm excited for her to go on to the next stage," she said. "I look for her to do great things academically first, and in soccer second."

Simon Duffy, Lambuth head women's soccer coach, said the school was interested in Porter because "she's a very strong and very fast defender."

"She's going to bring a lot to our team."

He said she could start right away for Lambuth, but, coming off a serious knee injury, she may not be able to do so physically.

HCHS soccer coach Thomas Klingenberg had mixed emotions about the signing.

"I'm trying to find a way to fail her so she can stay," he joked.

"She was district player of the year two years in a row. We're definitely going to miss her next year."
