Kory Bates gained his first TranSouth victory of his career in Lambuth's 6-4 win
Kory Bates gained his first TranSouth victory of his career in Lambuth's 6-4 win

Jackson, TN – After working all morning getting the field dry enough to play the Eagles baseball team scored three runs late and held on to beat Lyon College 6-4 in game one of TranSouth conference series.

The Scots struck first when Justin Brown took a 1-0 pitch and drove it over the right field fence. It did not take long for the Eagles to respond as Brandon Craig led the game off with a base hit and advanced to third on Ben White’s double. Craig would score on Mike Davis’ groundout. The game kept its back and forth style as Lyon put up two runs in the top of the second to regain the lead at 3-1. Bryan Willsey would cut the lead in the bottom half of the second with his fourth home run of the season and Lambuth would tie the game in the bottom of the third when Craig scored on another Davis groundout.

Lambuth freshman Kory Bates and Lyon senior Derek Bond would hold both teams at check for the next few innings. In the bottom half of the sixth inning Davis took Bonds’ first pitch fastball over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the spring and his third RBI of the game. Lambuth would add two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-3. Bates cruised through the seventh inning, but ran into a little trouble in the eighth. After a leadoff single by Brown, Bates recorded a fly ball out and gave up a double to Zac Wallace. Erin Keel relieved Bates. Bates continued his perfect season picking up his third win throwing seven and a third innings giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits whiling striking out four and walking one. Keel would enter the game with one out and runners at second and third. After a walk, he would give up a base hit that would score one, but that is all the further any Lyon runner would get. Keel struck out Kody Cox looking and got Justin Cunningham swinging to end the inning.

Tony Perez would come in and pick up his second save of the year ending the game with Lambuth winning a final of 6-4. Brandon Craig and Chris Siljendahl both led the offense combining for five hits between the two of them. Mike Davis drove in three runs on the day. Lambuth improves to 4-2 in the TranSouth Conference and 15-10 overall.

The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due rain. The field conditions were unplayable. TranSouth rules state that the three game series must be played on consecutive games, therefore the doubleheader is cancelled and will not be made up.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they host Lindsey Wilson. Game time is slated for 12:00 PM. Hope to see you all at the ballpark!!!
