Decatur, AL – When the Eagles of Lambuth and Shorter College agreed to play this spring, they decided to do everything in halves. Shorter being in Rome, GA and Lambuth in Jackson, TN, the two teams decided to meet half way in Decatur, AL. They split the cost of umpires and each was home team once. What Lambuth did not want, but got, was a split of wins in the two games. Both games were lacking offense and both games went into extra innings.

In the first game of the doubleheader, freshman Matt Fike took total control of the game on the mound. Fike gained the win throwing seven innings giving up three runs on six hits and striking out five. Lambuth would lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh when Fike ran into a little trouble allowing Shorter to tie the game at three. Lambuth would score in the top of the eighth and Matt Riley would come in and gain his second save of the season. Offensively, the Eagles could not get things rolling as the wind howled in at Calhoun Community College. Ben White collected three hits on the game and scored Lambuth's first run of the game. Ryan Hanson also had multiple hits with two. Josh Woods came off the bench in the eighth to lead the inning off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the leftfielder. Woods would score on the next hitter when James Poole beat out an infield single and Woods beat the throw to the plate. Lambuth would capture the game with a final score of 4-3. Matt Fike would pick up his first collegiate win, bringing his record to 1-2.

The second game was much like the first, not a lot of offense. Shorter jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning and the score would stay like that until the bottom of the sixth when Lambuth mustered up some life in the bats. Chris Siljendahl got the inning going with a base hit and Ben White sacrificed him to second. Henry Sanchez would then add a base hit to advance Siljendahl to third. Sanchez would advance to second on a wild pitch and the next pitch Mike Davis would hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Siljendahl and tie the game at one. Ryan Concannon would drive the fourth pitch he saw up the middle and the Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. Shorter would crawl back with one run in the top of the seventh and Lambuth could not get any offense in big situations for the rest of the game. In the top of the tenth inning Shorter pushed across two runs to make the score 4-2. In the bottom of the inning Lambuth would cut the lead to 4-3 and had a runner in scoring position with two outs, but could not come up with the big hit. Ben White again led the offense with two hits. White had five hits on the day.

Dylan McCurry threw six strong innings for the Eagles giving up only one run on six hits and struck out four. Josh Barnes took the loss throwing three innings giving up two hits and striking out one.

The Eagles return to TranSouth Conference action this weekend when they take on Mid-Continent in Mayfield, KY. The nine-inning game is slated for 2:00 on Friday with the doubleheader starting at 1:00 on Saturday. Hope to see you all at the ballpark!!
