Hugh Freeze - Head Coach

The 2008-2009 season will be Coach Hugh Freeze's first year as the Head Coach of the Lambuth University Eagle Football program.  He officially began his duties on January 22, 2008.

Athletic Director Ken Brown has named Freeze as the new Head Football Coach at Lambuth University on January 19, 2008. "We are pleased to be bringing a coach with Hugh's credentials and experience to Lambuth. His contacts and knowledge will move our program forward in a positive direction, hopefully making Lambuth an NAIA power once again," commented Brown. Freeze replaced longtime Lambuth coach Vic Wallace who left his post as head coach at the end of the 2007 season to become Special Assistant to the President for Athletics.

Freeze came to Lambuth from the University of Mississippi where he served most recently as the Interim Head Coach. The 2007 season was his second year as Recruiting Coordinator and his first as wide receivers coach, after working with the Rebel tight ends in 2006. Freeze joined Coach Ed Orgeron's on-the-field coaching staff in January of 2006, after previously serving as the Assistant Athletics Director for Football External Affairs at the University of Mississippi upon joining Orgeron's staff in February of 2005.

While serving the one year as Assistant Athletics Director for Football External Affairs, Freeze managed the day-to-day external affairs as they related to the Ole Miss football program. He served as liaison with external parties and supervised on-campus recruiting activities, coordinated visits with NFL scouts and officials and coordinated the spring coaching clinic.

Freeze joined the Ole Miss football staff after serving 13 years in the field of education as a classroom teacher, coach and administrator, all at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tenn. He also had served as Dean of Students, head football coach and head girls' basketball coach.

From 1998 to 2000, Freeze was Associate Director of Development and in 2001 helped spearhead the building, development and funding for a $3 million high school football facility. He coached Briarcrest's teams to 12 state championship games, winning six state titles in the process.

As head football coach at Briarcrest from 1995 to 2004, Freeze compiled a 99-23 record in leading the Saints to six consecutive state championship games, which included state championship titles in 2002 and 2004. He coached the school to its first undefeated season in 1996. Briarcrest won regional championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2002. He was named Region 8AA Coach of the Year fives times and Associated Press Coach of the Year four times.

Freeze also served as offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Briarcrest from 1992 to 1994 as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice.

As head girls' basketball coach from 1994 to 2005, Freeze led Briarcrest to four state championships (1998, 2001, 2004, 2005) and was the state runner-up three times (1999, 2000, 2003), while compiling an overall record of 305-63. He earned District 15AA Coach of the Year honors in both 1994 and 1995, was the WBCA District 9 National Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2001 and was selected TSSAA Coach of the Year four times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004). He was also the Nike Select Team coach in 2000 when they won the National Championship.

A 1988 graduate of Senatobia (Miss.) High School, Freeze earned his bachelors degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. He also received the Associate of Arts from Northwest Mississippi Community College in 1990.

It was while attending USM that he became active in mission projects, serving as a missionary in Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Tasmania, Australia. Freeze also served as the state president for the Mississippi Baptist Student Union.

"I am excited about the opportunities and challenges that await me at Lambuth and I am honored to follow Coach Wallace," commented Freeze. "With the support of Mr. Brown and Dr. Zuker (Lambuth President) my staff and I are going to make every effort to put Lambuth football back on the map."

Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters, Ragan, Jordan, and Madison and plan to reside in Jackson.
