During his freshman year, Barnes played both football and baseball for the Lambuth Eagles. However he has since decided to focus solely on baseball. Barnes recorded his first collegiate victory April 6, 2007 against Christian Brothers University. During the 07-08 season, he went 1-1. With his sole win coming against Division 1 opponent Belmont University.

Josh is the son of Kenny and Tammy Barnes who reside in Gallatin, TN. He has three older brothers Anthony, Brandon and Eric who are all starting families of their own. Josh enjoys watching football and baseball in his free time, along with playing playstation
